FAQ

Users are intelligent. They ask some really good questions. So why not take advantage of that and show off their questions, then answer them publicly? Here is a list of questions frequently asked by users:

What’s the difference between the single-use license, and the developer’s license?
The single use license is for people wanting to use the theme on only one site. It essentially restricts a user from using the theme over and over again. However, the developer’s license is designed for multiple uses. If you own three sites and want to use Proximity on all three, then the developer’s license is for you, my friend.

Can I remove the credits in the footer of the theme?
We ask that you keep the credits in the footer if you are a single-use license owner. However, if you bought the developer’s license, feel free to remove the footer links. All we ask is that you not give yourself credit for the theme. That would just be wrong.

What are the sizes of the images that are next to the posts on the homepage?
The larger image (in the feature section) is going to be 300×200 pixels, and the smaller images (the thumbnails) are going to be 100×100 pixels.

Should I attach both a large image and a thumbnail to each on of my posts?
I would certainly recommend you do so. Posts are displayed differently depending on the page you happen to be looking at. Attaching both image sizes ensures that your posts always have an attached image next to them if the theme calls for it.

What happens if I don’t attach an image to a post using custom fields?
The theme is smart enough to detect when you’ve either forgotten or neglected to attach the correct images, and will fall back on default images, named after the custom field they correspond with. So, if you forgot to attach he 100×100 thumbnail image, the theme will pull the /images/thumb.png file from the theme folder. The same goes for the larger feature-300×200 image as well (/images/feature-300×200.png).

What plugins will I need to operate this theme?
No plugins are necessary for the theme to operate, but if you don’t install the following plugins, you will get a little message in certain areas of the theme that tell you to install them. So, I do recommend you install Popularity Contest, Most Commented, and Related Entries. See the documentation for each of them for info on how to install them.

What plugins does this theme support.
Officially, none. While most plugins will more than likely work with this theme, I can’t possibly take on the complex job of testing and making this theme compatible with all plugins. Please do not be surprised if a plugin breaks a part of the theme.

How many posts does the home page show?
The homepage will show one feature story, four “other headlines”, and a single post from as many categories as you choose to feature on the homepage via the theme options. In the demo, I’ve chosen four categories to feature on the homepage, and you’ll notice that each one of those categories is displaying a single post from that category.

Does this theme work on WordPress.com blogs?
No. WordPress.com only allows specific themes to be used on their blogs. Proximity is a premium theme and is not allowed on WordPress.com at the moment.

What kind of support should I expect after the sale?
The support forums are a great place to ask general questions about the theme, report bugs, etc. We will help you out as much as we can, but we also expect you to understand the basics of WordPress. Using this theme could not be easier, but when it comes to things like image editing (cropping, resizing), custom modifications of the theme, and other more advanced functions, you’re on your own. I can’t hold your hand while you attempt to move the sidebar from right to left, and change every color the theme uses. That’s just not realistic. Please be considerate of my time, and I’ll do my best to help you out as much as I can.

How easy is it to modify this theme?
Anyone familiar with CSS will be comfortable editing the look of Proximity. If you’re not comfortable editing CSS, I recommend hiring a professional to do the modifications for you (please note, this will require purchasing the developers license).

Where do I make changes to the theme?
Because we will occasionally update the theme, I ask that you NOT make style modifications in any of the main CSS files. If you need to make changes to the styles, do it in the /css/custom.css. Any styles you declare there will override the styles in the style.css or other specific CSS files.

What if I need to change something in the other template files?
I would strongly suggest you keep track of the changes you make. If/when I release updates to the theme, you’ll want to be able to re-create your custom mods with the new version, and the only way you can do that is if you kept a record of what you did. If you install an update and you lose your information, don’t say I didn’t warn ya!

Can I call or email you?
No phone calls please. And I would really prefer that all support requests go into the forums. But if you need to email me for some reason, feel free to do so through the contact form. I’ll try to reply or point you in the right direction as soon as I can.

Can I hire you to do a custom mod of Proximity?
Possibly. However, I don’t do “design” work. If you provide me with a mockup/comp of what you want your site to look like, I may be able to help you (no promises). If I can’t take on your project, I will try to refer you to someone who can.
